Facing Challenges in Miniaturized Sample Handling

The trend in life sciences is towards smaller volumes (faster results, less sample & reagents used) and highly integrated sample pre-treatment (more reproducible, more reliable). At the same time regulations call for verification of process steps involved, which is a challenge in miniaturized systems. The solution is to ideally combine the laws of physics with either integrated miniaturized sensors close to the point of action or remote sensors.

Dr. Helmut F. Knapp, CSEM SA, Head Center Alpnach

Helmut Knapp studied physics, has a PhD in biophysics, and has been active in the development of instruments for applications in the life sciences for over 24 years. He has been with CSEM for 16 years and today heads the center in Alpnach and is additionally responsible for CSEM’s activities in Tools & Instruments for Life Sciences. He is also CSEM’s delegate for the industry cluster toolpoint for lab sciences and is a board member of biotechnet.
